Papers from the Jupyter Project for citations and references (aka, how to cite jupyter)

Here is an ongoing list of papers and links to DOIs that I could find. It is for papers directly from subprojects, or individuals in leadership roles when they published, publishing explicitly about Jupyter projects and ideas. It is a wiki-post, others are encouraged to add and edit!

This issue has some good discussion and links as well:

Context:

There have been several questions asked over the years for “where to cite Jupyter”. Jupyter has many subprojects and technologies, and many of them have their own citable artifacts. Note: these are only papers directly from sub-projects and individuals serving in leaership roles if they published “about Jupyter” while wearing their role hat. If something is missing feel free to comment and we can add it. If Jupyter creates an “official” list then I’ll delete this and link to that.

I put together this list because I needed a few Jupyter citations while writing the jupyter book 2 paper for scipy 2025. I thought it’d help to put it in a dedicated post since the question has been asked a few other times. I ask others to add and edit this as new papers come to mind! Just please keep it to papers that were:

  • Published directly “by jupyter subprojects”
  • Published from a person in a leadership role within Jupyter when they published the paper about Jupyter
  • Generally speaking: use your best judgment here, this isn’t supposed to be a way to advertisement every Jupyter-related paper, but to list canonical papers from the subprojects.
