About the Job

The Research and Instruction Systems Integration Engineer 4 will utilize advanced systems and software integration concepts and align them with location or institutional objectives to address highly complex issues. Their responsibilities include resolving and implementing medium to large projects of broad scope and complexity, as well as handling intricate business processes, system functionality, and integration matters. The incumbent will select appropriate tools, methods, and evaluation criteria to achieve results, deliver technical presentations, and evaluate new technologies through cost/benefit analyses. They may also lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.

The primary focus of this role is to build and deploy scalable JupyterHub environments for both onpremises and cloud-based setups, catering to UC Merced instructors in graduate and undergraduate programs, and the UC Merced research community. This entails providing access to computational resources and software, integrating with existing instructional tools like Canvas, ensuring reliable resource management, and delivering effective training and support to researchers. The incumbent will collaborate extensively with UC Merced’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), particularly the Cyberinfrastructure and Research Technologies (CIRT) team, and other OIT teams when necessary.

Responsibilities also include developing and deploying JupyterHub environments for on-premises and cloud High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments, providing operational support, monitoring, and reporting tools for research and instructional HPC, and educating the campus community on these tools. They may lead the design and implementation of new instructional tools within on-premises/cloud high-performance environments, utilizing state-of-the-art computational, storage, and network technologies. Evaluating multiple vendor proposals and determining the best solutions for computational excellence will also be part of the role. The position demands comprehensive knowledge of deploying emerging cyberinfrastructure and instructional technologies, along with proficiency in version control systems like GIT for tracking system changes.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts highly complex systems programming and support activities. Activities include responsibilities for the technical design, planning, implementation, and the highest level of performance tuning and recovery procedures for mission critical research computing systems, services, and resources and integration with cloud-based architecture. Applies advanced systems/infrastructure concepts to define, design and implement highly complex networked systems and solutions.

  2. Specifies, writes and executes highly complex software and scripts to support research systems management, log analysis and other system administration duties for multiple, highly integrated HPC systems. Documents, obtains approval and communicates planned and unplanned changes to all systems in production.

  3. Participates in meetings related to infrastructure and datacenter responsibilities, including systemwide councils and at national supercomputing centers.

  4. Teaches, trains and educates users in traditional HPC topics, techniques and methodologies in HPC enhancing research computing user experience. Trainings include software, data carpentry sessions, programming, scripting and best practices in computing, working proactively to identify and develop the research cyberinfrastructure user community and to broaden computational research engagement across and beyond UC Merced.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution (required); and

• 5 years of related experience (advanced-level experience of at least 7 years may be considered as acceptable in lieu of degree).

Critical Knowledge, Experience, and Competencies:

• Advanced Knowledge of HPC, on-premises and cloud cyberinfrastructure and development and operations of JupyterHub environments.

• Highly advanced skills and demonstrated experience associated with one or more of the following: Operational knowledge and Software development knowledge on an onpremises/ cloud HPC environment; experience with instructional technology and instructional tools such as Canvas; research, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of scientific software for onpremises/cloud HPC platforms.

• Experience researching and evaluating new technology and solutions for complex environments. Proven record of integrating cutting edge hardware and software resources into complex system solutions.

I worked on this team for a few years, I recommend it. Fairly small team, and flat hierarchy plus Merced being a recent university many opportunities to deploy new tech and change processes.
