New contributor here – Guidance on contributing to Jupyter for GSoC 2026

Hello everyone,
I’m Sanchit, and I’m preparing to contribute to the Jupyter ecosystem with the long-term goal of applying for GSoC 2026.

I have been learning Python actively and want to start with beginner-friendly issues so I can gradually understand the codebase and become a consistent contributor. I’m comfortable with improving documentation, fixing small bugs, and working on beginner-level features.

Could you please guide me on:

  • The best place to start contributing to Jupyter

  • Active repositories/issues suitable for newcomers

  • Any communication channels (Discord, Matrix, etc.) I should join

  • Any contribution guidelines or workflows I should follow

I’m excited to learn, stay consistent, and eventually contribute meaningful work to the Jupyter community.

Thank you!
