Hey here’s another quick update on what stood out to me from the executive council and the jupyter foundation. Sorry this one is a bit late - September has been busy with the start of school!
Call for Community Proposals is now live
After a lot of work and writing, the call for proposals for community funding is live:
Check out the CfP on jupyterfoundation.org. This is a way to give more agency directly to contributors and maintainers in the Jupyter community to voice how they’d like to use funding.
I am happy to sit down with anybody interested in writing a proposal and provide advice, brainstorming, editing, etc.
In this first round, we wanted to just get the process rolling and see what people come up with. My guess is that we will hit snags in review/decision/implementation/etc because it’s the first time we’ve done it. That’s OK! To me, the most important thing is getting this rolling and releasing some funds so that we can start learning and improving.
We extended the Call for Proposals for community events
A reminder that the community events CfP is open as well:
We decided to give another week of time for the CfP for people to put in proposals because a number of folks were organizing things at the last second.
Both of these are going to have more opportunities for funding
To answer a question I’ve gotten a few times: this is not a “now or never” moment. We’ll likely have some kind of rolling or ongoing process for these, but we wanted to set deadlines so that submissions come in “batches” and we can review them more efficiently. So I think the earlier the better, and there’s always a chance we run out of budget, but you shouldn’t assume this is your only chance to bring in ideas. In these first iterations especially, we will likely cap the amount of funds to release because we don’t know how much work it will be to actually review and release the funds! Once we have a better handle on that we can probably move more quickly / have more proposals / etc.
This is a monthly experiment from Chris as part of the JEC’s efforts to open up communication and channels of transparency with the JEC and the board. He’ll do his best to keep posting these updates. He’s time-boxing them to about 15 minutes in an effort to keep them sustainable. This means they’ll be rough! He’d love feedback about whether this is useful or how they could be better.
