my problem is solved and I’m just leaving this here in case someone gets confused in the same way I did.
Whenever I called getpass() in my notebook and tried to fill in the field, the files in my file browser would just “disappear” and only folders would remain visible.

I only later noticed that my browser had filled in my credentials automatically by putting a user name inside the file browser filter (!?) which of course filters out all files that don’t match the user name.
It seems awfully obvious now and this has thrown me for a loop longer than I’d care to admit, but I hope this helps someone else that got thrown off by this problem during a long work day…
